Robbers use hammers in shop raid

Robbers stole watches worth more than £20,000 after smashing the front window of a Cambridgeshire jewellers.

The three masked men used sledgehammers to smash the window of the Mappin and Webb store in Market Hill, Cambridge.

Police said one of the men tried to force open the front door of the shop but when he failed all three smashed the window.

Seven watches were stolen in the raid on Wednesday. It followed similar raids in Essex, Norfolk and Hertfordshire.

The men involved in the Cambridge robbery fled in the direction of the Guildhall where they got into a waiting car.

They are believed to have been wearing dark clothes and had their faces obscured by scarves or balaclavas.

Police in the towns where the two similar robberies and an attempted robbery took place earlier this month, said they would investigate whether they were linked.

They happened in Bishops Stortford, Southend and Great Yarmouth and all involved masked men armed with sledgehammers.
